What is Infertility?
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a year of trying if you’re under 35, or after six months if you’re over 35. If you are experiencing this, it’s advisable to consult with a fertility specialist to determine the underlying cause and explore appropriate treatment options.
Infertility is often linked to issues with ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries). Poor sperm quality, which affects the sperm’s ability to reach and fertilize the egg, can also contribute to conception difficulties.
The most common cause of infertility in women is problems with ovulation. Factors such as age, hormone imbalances, weight fluctuations, exposure to chemicals or radiation, and smoking can all impact fertility.
Infertility affects approximately 17.5% of adults globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which means one in every six people may face fertility challenges.
Infertility in men is often caused by hormonal imbalances or blockages in sperm movement, which can lead to low sperm count. Factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, illegal drug use, prolonged anabolic steroid use, cancer treatments (e.g., chemotherapy), certain antibiotics and antidepressants, as well as being overweight, can all negatively impact sperm production and movement.
Consider seeking a fertility consultation if you’re under 35 and have been trying to conceive for a year or more, if you’re 35 or older and have been trying for six months, or if you’re experiencing irregular, painful, or absent periods while trying to conceive.
